Day 5: Urban Outreach Center

The above are the videos that we DIDN'T get to upload last night!

Today was HOT!!!! We lost power, as the last post said, at about 11:00 or so. It came back on twice for just a second but was off for good. At some point in the night it came on because our phones got a little charge...when we woke up it was plain miserable!!!! We were pouring sweat and most everyone was grouchy!  It was a good lesson for ALL of us, though. Chris was sure to remind us to imagine how the homeless feel when they have to sleep on the streets...we quit our grumbling then...we didn't have a choice!

Enough about that! Today we only had to work half of the day. We worked at the center where we are staying. We did yard work from about 8:30 until 11:30. Oh yeah, did I mention it was HOT? ;) The youth were awesome! They pulled weeds, cut limbs, cut grass, weed-eated, etc. Most of the work that we did was on an alley that backs up to the back yard of the center. It has been shut down for cars but people use it all of the time! Urban outreach tries really hard to impact the neighborhood where it is...we were honored to be a part of it!!

We had two favorite things about our work day. One of our favorites was a little girl named Raine. Raine saw us working on the alley beside her house and asked if she could help. She couldn't have been any older than 7. She jumped right in with the girls and was sweeping dirt, picking up trash, moving limbs, etc. Eventually, after warming up, she jumped in with the guys and was spaying round-up, taking our sunglasses to wear, helping move trash bags, etc. She was precious! It was awesome to watch the youth interact with her and show her God's love. C.U.T.E! The other favorite part of our work day was all about a stump...go figure! A group from yesterday cut a tree down and left the stump for our boys to take care of. It took them about one look for them to decide to 'hilbilly it up'. B-Rad had the boys hook a chain around the stump and then hook the chain to bus and pull the stump out in 2 seconds! The staff was super tickled! They figured it would take them a while to dig it up and it took all of 2 seconds! :)

After work we changed our minds AGAIN and headed to the Newseum downtown. We found out they were having a special- for every adult, six youth got in free! We had an awesome time revisiting all kinds of history! They had a news helicopter hanging from the ceiling, 8 ACTUAL pieces from the Berlin wall, scrap from 9/11, the ACTUAL door from Watergate. It was awesome! The youth seem to enjoy it a lot! While out we got to eat lunch and supper at Union Station with SO many different options! :) I think everyone was happy about that decision!

Tonight was the powerful worship session of the week. The staff summed up this weeks theme of baggage and how we need to lay those things down so that they aren't keeping us from following Christ. After worship we headed outside and everyone got to write down their baggage on a luggage tag and literally nail it to a wooden cross. We had some awesome family time tonight loving on one another! We are so blessed to be able to work with such an awesome group of youth who are on fire for Christ!! :)

We plan on heading out a 9 in the am and hit the road for Galax! The youth will sleep the whole way and we, the adults, will about DIE trying to stay awake! ;) No, I'm just teasing! We are shooting to home about 4 or 5! :)

Thanks for the continued prayers and support!
